Home School College Football Fans 13 - Recapping the Regular Season 2022
The national championship is coming tomorrow: Returning champs Georgia, the undefeated 2022 team that overcame Ohio State in a pretty close semi-final game. OSU was blemished against the Michigan Wolverines, who were undefeated until they got bandoggled against the surprisingly resilient Texas Christian Horned Frogs. More on that at the end.
I have written about some of the seven teams that I covered this season: BYU, Virginia. BYU finished 8-5 (60th in CBS Sports Poll for now), Virginia a very sad 3-7 (95th). Our sympathies and condolences to the team and families that lost their players, four killed tragically and nonsensically with two games to go in November, both cancelled.
Brigham Young made a goal line stand in their New Mexico bowl game against a decent Southern Methodist Mustangs, and won by a point. I think that BYU should be re-shuffled into a higher ranking, at least higher than SMU rated at 51. I spoke of the awful doldrums of October, where BYU purely was demolished by Liberty, which I saw in person, and a close loss to East Carolina. Most of the victors over BYU did well in the bowls, which should reflect well on my Cougars. Maybe top 35, if we are lucky?
Post Mortem on the Best of the Rest:
Utah finished 10-4, losing the Rose Bowl to the Penn State Nittany Lions, 21-35. PSU had a really good season, only losing to Michigan and Ohio State, and finishing 11-2, ranked 8th by CBS now, but they could rise... The Utes had a lot of promise this past season, but started with a close loss to Florida, and then lost their three more. They did win the PAC-12 championship, costing the USC Trojans a chance at the college football championship. Way to go, Utes! You ruined a few other seasons, other than your own. I thought they could have run the table.
Fresno State Bulldogs
Out of the seven teams I covered, the FSU players of the San Joaquin Valley may be the second best. They ended the season on a high note, beating Bosie State in the Mountain West Championship, 28-16, and then winning their bowl against Washington State, 29-6. Impressive. RIP to Coach Mike Leach, who helped those Cougars reach many heights for a ten or so many years in Pullman. Leach was only 61; he had a sudden heart attack as a third year coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, that played and won their bowl in dedication to their leader.
I think that the Bulldogs of the central valley should rise greatly in their CBS rankings, from only 40 right before the CFP Final. I think that at 10-4 maybe they will be top 25. I wish BYU could have secured a couple more wins and would have been as much as FSU... Oregon, Notre Dame, and Arkansas were worthy opponents; ...
Will finish with the other three next... JMU, Texas A&M, and who else?
