Ten Years Since Chile

It's Been a Decade...Write What you Know

End of March 2015.

Around ten years ago I found out I was going back to Chile... it was not my full idea to do it, but I had planted the notion with my wife, who had then acted on this wistful thought that I had shared with her sometime in our almost five years of marriage; she proceeded to buy the tickets to go there without my knowledge. She got the tickets for ourselves and two children, maybe in April, and we flew at the end of June.

2005. The year of transition for us. It's all transition, after all. It's all new and old.

I had suggested there was a town in the South American Republica de Chile that was ideal: it was not too big or too small, but it had the right balance of rural and urban. I had been there for four months as a church volunteer and had really enjoyed it; I was hoping to have three more months at the end of my mission there but I was transferred out to a much smaller town.

I had enjoyed living in Chile twice in the early 90s. Chile was a country in transition; it presented things to me that were valuable. Opportunities for growth that I did not think were possible in my home land of the United States. It is harder to be a prophet in your own land: that curse was upon me to some degree in Indiana, or Utah, or California, or whatever other home state I found myself in. It was being in my home earth in general. It did not offer enough difference, I guess.

Chile proffered a different place, clime, attitude, language...a different me. Same but different. Better? Worse? Different. New. Preferable. We all seek something new or different, and even though it is not in actuality better, we feel that the change itself is best.

It can happen to us: to be bored with our old selves. Or it seemed to happen with me.

Chile was a land of escape for me, back when I was 19. It worked, to be a different land and language, different culture.

Culture. Big stuff.

Little stuff...Just a person. One individual.

Indiana, Our Indiana...On Wisconsin?

2015 March Madness is in full swing, and my Hoosiers are one and done. Again.

I got used to this phenomenon since 1983 or so...The IU boys get bounced early. A lot.

However, they would compensate for early upsets with deep runs...And this made watching the IU Hurryin' Hoosiers a joy.

Alas, there is much left to conquer.

I, as many other Hoosier fans, were encouraged by their play by mid-January of this year. But they played their way out...Injuries, small sizes to begin with...

I did get upset at the refs, (as apparently Tom Crean did and said so to one official after the game, Reports: Indiana coach Tom Crean said 'you suck' to ref after loss: CBS Sports - See more at: https://indiana.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1748954#sthash.w6pnnw7O.dpuf).

My family heard me yell at the officials from over a thousand miles away.

Three fouls favoring Wichita State in a key stretch set me off. It happened with about 7-9 minutes left. This was a tough game, and the key refereed decisions made a big difference.

One: A Shocker crashed into Hanner Mosquera-Perea under the basket. Hanner was jumping straight up, and the Shocker gets the two free throws. Wrong call.

Troy Williams gets called on a charge at the other end. WRONG CALL.

IU throws it away, but a Hoosier (maybe Rob Johnson) plants himself in front of the basket while another teammate harasses the penetrator. Another two foul shots against IU.

I could have taken 2 of the 3 bad calls, but all three combined just deflate the real chances of a fair game.

And then Baker gets the iffy contact FTs at the end.

All said, I hope WSU nails Kansas. And better officiating, no matter what.

Go IU. Better times next year.

Blog on, EMC.

PS: Oh, yeah: About the Badgers... now that my favorite Big Ten team is done, I would not mind seeing the Cheeseheads win it all. My least favorite teams to win now would be: Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas...Maybe switching the two Carolina teams.

KMPC does not want to say anything.

FoxSports.Com Owes Me and a Few Others

I once had a blog that I contributed to from 2006 to 2009.

I wrote some good stuff on it. Many people commented on it.

It was good to get interaction, comments and criticism. Good writing deserves this.

We had that.

But FoxSports.com eventually nullified us.

Longer story another time.

But at the end of the day, there is stuff, writings, memories that I would like back.

Personal stuff to my own family...

Does it exist somewhere?

Blog it, maybe. EMC
