Home School Fans Episode 2: Week 1 in 2022 - Indiana! Whoa, my Hoosiers.
First Friday night opening game in Bloomington since 1995. The year that I was graduating from my other alma mater, 1400 miles away in Provo. I got to so some big traveling and exploring that year, and wound up getting a talent agency to get me some movie and T.V. jobs. But enough about me. This is about Indiana football.
Whew.
It was close. And a close call kept the Illini from getting what looked like a well fought for touch down. The tape reviewers sustained the call, which was an inconclusive dropped pass, and IU gave up a 3 point field goal instead of a 7 point touch down. Crisis averted.
IU lead the plucky Illini 16-10 at the half. Some good turnovers helped the Hoosiers. But at the opening of the third quarter, a squibbed catch lead to an interception and Illinois had the lead. Later they blew a 4th and 1 at the goal line, added another Field Goal, which set up the Hoosier last drive to get 75 yards, mostly passing, to push into th end zone and get the 23 - 20 win. Relief. IU does not have all the bad juju from last year, 2021. We think. Hopefully more like pandemic 2020, when we barely beat Penn State in the opener.
Hmmm. Which way will IU be? They finished with spread by 3, and hopefully all the guys, despite some super hard hits (senior transfer from Auburn Shawn Shivers, first play), and a few other dings, (AJ Barner and a big defensive guy, maybe Jones), we can drop a lot of points on the Idaho Vandals last week.
Last notes:
1. Illinois: they may be better than IU overall. Impressive running and defense against the run. I hope the Illini finish strong and do well. I like them.
2. Conner Bazelak (BAZE) did well. The interception was not on him.
3. Some IU receivers? Awesome. Camper and Mathews, and a couple others show promise. AJ Barner at Tight End? He did okay, but I am not as impressed as I wanted to be.
4. Indiana defense? Had some issues with some running, but got the job done. They forced turnovers and made some huge timely stops. I need more of the hard hits, and plugging the pockets. And fumbles and interceptions.
5. IU got some fortunate calls. Like the TD that did not count. But, if IU had trailed that much, maybe they would have compensated. These guys might be clutch. CBSSports will get them a better rating than 88.
Things are looking good, Hoosiers.
GO, I.U.! Fight, fight, fight!
At the time of writing, UVA tied with the Richmond Spiders. 8 minutes to go in the 1st qtr.
ReplyDeleteUVA wins 34-17, but A&M and BYU are delayed by weather.
