Emoni Bates and Antoine Davis: Good Players on Bad Teams

Emoni Bates and Mike Davis Junior: Good Players on Bad Teams

The biggest and normally most successful college basketball programs of Michigan are struggling in 2023, but they both has winning records, which is not always that easy in the Big Ten. These are the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans. Two smaller programs, Eastern Michigan and Detroit Mercy, have some good individual players, but the rest of their teammates are lacking. Both teams are losing the majority of their matches thus far into the season. It looks like a wash for both.

Antoine, son of former Indiana University coach Mike Davis, is becoming one of the most prolific Division I scorers of all time at Detroit Mercy, but they only got their 10th win today, compared to 15 losses. Eastern Michigan has the talents of highly touted Emoni Bates, a transfer from Memphis, but they have an even worse record, losing a close one to Ball State last night in Muncie (I saw a sweatshirt on a student that said, "Ball State, the Harvard of Muncie"!)

Bates is scoring 20 per game, a large guard with skills, but his team will not go far. I doubt Detroit Mercy will, either.

Anyway, I wish them both well, and it should be interesting how their futures go. The present, for the meantime, is not that special on a collective basis.
