Of Course, the Life of the Mother is a Priority
With the recent repeal of Roe versus Wade, the 1973 legal precedent allowing the abortion of babies by their mothers, by the United States Supreme Court some 8 days ago, many women and men, and youth have felt like the life of the mother and women in general has been cheapened, degraded, violated, attacked, disrespected, on many grounds. Some believe that women's rights have been taken away by the U.S. federal government. Many opposed to this ruling, the overturning, have blamed public causes supported by many with particular religious beliefs and morals for this reversal. They have accused the Supreme Court justices who voted for the repeal as being duplicitous and liars, because in their vetting that they indicated that they would not reverse precedent in law. Blame and recriminations can be levied in many fashions.
A lot of different strong feelings have been felt by both sides of the argument, the debate as to whether unborn fetuses have more rights to survive the womb once created. Are these rights more than the mother? No, but living human beings have rights. Some define that point as "viability", when the fetus can survive outside the womb independently. In my opinion, both sides have reasons to feel as they do, strong feelings for rights of people, and each state (there are 50) needs to figure out the best laws to legislate how to protect life in general, and certainly the life of the mother, the primary carrier of unborn babies. I believe in the sanctity of life, so I think it is obvious to safeguard the life of the mother.
Here are my justified reasons to give abortion rights to mothers, whether they are minors or adults.
1. When the life of the mother is at risk, she and her partner have a right to decide to abort. As much as a fetus is a life with a sanctity to survive, the mother's well being does take precedent when her own life is at risk. I had a friend in California whose wife had severe epilepsy, had an electrical collar to help her in her condition, became pregnant, which made her life at risk by giving birth; they decided as a couple to have the child. I told him--call him Brian--that they as potential parents would be justified by God and society to not have the child if they so chose. Last I knew they had a second baby after that first one. I think that every pregnancy and birth put her life at risk.
2. If the unborn baby is brain dead or irreparably damaged within the womb, the parents should have a right to abort. This can be determined case by case, like any serious condition of human health. Treated emotionally and medically like any treatment that people receive in conditions of life and death.
3. If the victim of rape becomes pregnant, she should be given the choice to abort. Coercion and forced sex and impregnation is heinous. I happen to think that most rapists ought to get harsher sentences, including death in some cases, as they are duly tried under the rule of law, by due process, judges, and juries, as appropriate per the crime or crimes committed
4. Incest is not a legal act, and is deplorable, despicable. Babies conceived in this fashion should be aborted, with the rare exception to keep the child if the case proves tenable, for whatever reason.
All of the above reasons and conditions of unborn life are very compelling reasons to justify abortions. I do not understand the states currently that do not have the exceptions for rape and incest. Although some people argue that two wrongs do not make a right, as in the case of forced pregnancy followed by abortion, I think that all these are valid reasons to protect and safeguard the carrier, and respect and honor the life and well-being of the mother.
Contraception should be used prudently for those who do not want to have babies, and hopefully each state of our union will come to wise and prudent decisions regarding the sanctity of life for all when it comes to reproductive rights.
Religiously based or not, all of us can agree that life is a sacred cause that we should defend and uphold, no matter our political or moral leanings.
Can we be pro-choice, pro-woman, pro-mother, and pro-life?
I think that this can happen.
I hope that all involved can take the proper measures to follow the laws of our land, act wisely, and be safe, happy, and prosperous. No matter what side of the ruling we may fall on.
