Genius for Music - Savant or Gifted
I know a person, who is close to me, that must have a supreme talent or proclivity for music and the lyrics in them. She has seemingly hundreds of songs memorized. I am more recently blown away in the apparent unending lists of songs and tunes that she has logged in her brain. These words and lyrics are from all varieties of genres and styles: country, folk, gospel, rock, church hymns, spiritual, pop, ballad, jazz, holiday, on and on.
I think that the first time that I witnessed such a savant of lyrics was a short time roommate that I knew in Chile while I was down there studying abroad. His name was Jory. He had done a mission in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. He had a Walkman or other music playing device in our shared hotel room, and would sing by heart song after song. He said that he had hundreds of song lyrics memorized. He was learning Spanish to be in our study abroad in Chile, and I believe he did fine with it. (He ended up dating and marrying a local Chilean girl!). Me, on the other hand, I mess up lyrics of songs left and right. Even the ones that I do know by heart I can switch up and muff, like the Star Spangled Banner or take your pick of childhood nursery songs or other simplistic tunes.
Our brains are wired differently, yes? Safe to say.
I have memorized a lot of foreign words, vocabulary in second languages, and much of it I can do properly, in good grammar. But I cannot light a match to the ability of knowing these songs and lyrics.
I had a roommate in college who was a type of savant at learning languages. He said he has mastered French and Spanish by the time he left high school. When I knew him he had learned Russian,
Vive the ability to know the words! Of anything. And, to add, this person of whom I speak sings beautifully and with amazing heart and soul. She is an overall incredible talent. I can just listen, observe, enjoy, and reflect that God has given her and the world an amazing talent and gift.
I am blessed and lucky, and all the songs are at her reach, and by default so am I.
As long as we are together. Which is another huge, enormous, blessing.
I am just a poor boy... the Boxer. Yeah. I can barely get those lyrics right. But I try. And I will keep on admiring the endless talent...
Yeah. Yes!
