Home School Fans Episode 7: Week 6 - Ugly 1-6 ... Eegh.
We are on Thursday of the week following week 6, and I realize that I was not looking forward to doing the recap of last weekend, so much so that I did not even think about it much. My teams were almost skunked, and I am not that big a JMU fan, but they are doing great to their credit.
Who is best now, out of my selected seven?
Utah? Loses by 10 to UCLA.
Texas A&M? Maybe. Just a pass from beating top ranked Alabama.
BYU? Nope. Lost to surging Notre Dame in Las Vegas.
Indiana? Held a tie with top rated Michigan till the second half.
Virginia? Gave up the ghost to Louisville...
Fresno State? No, they keep losing.
James Madison? Yeah, dem boys keep bouncing the competition.
Way to go Dukes! The only winners... I could talk some about these losses...
Starting with IU: At noon the Hoosiers hosted the vaunted Wolverines. The score was 10-10 at half time, and I was hopeful. Despite injuries to key receivers for IU, and the starting Tight End, Indiana was giving a go. But then they got nothing else, and lost 31-10. Held the QB McCarthy below his 79 percent passer percentage, but gave up too much and walked away, now 3-3. Big game this Saturday, hosting Maryland. If we beat the Terps, a bowl is still possible. If not, I do not think so.
UCLA is undefeated and Utah got its second loss, at the Rose Bowl to a less than attended game. Is Utah not top 20? It's possible now. CBSSports.com has them at 24. Next up: Big, bad #7 USC. This could determine a lot. I want Utah over the Trojans, as I love to see USC lose. This goes back to the early 2000s, for sure.
Texas A&M almost beat the Tide, as mentioned. Alabama is not it's usual impressive self, but now the Aggies are 3-3 and ranked 42nd, but I am positive that they are better than that. 'Bama is ranked 3rd, dropping below Ohio State AND Georgia.
Then there are the Cougs, now ranked 32nd, after losing 28-20 to the Irish. I watched the game chagrined. No passes to the Tight End, the other one left the team. Dallin Holker. Rex should be catching a few a game. The Irish TE killed BYU, and then the running backs and other receivers kept them on the field too long. Jaren Hall had a poor game, especially the first half. Next up against Arkansas, which is 3-3 and ranked 44, dropping 12 spots from the week before. BYU needs to fix things, particularly the offense. Should be tough, but I pray that they are due.
UVA, crunched by the Cardinals of Louisville. The Cavaliers are now... 94th! 2-4, and this weekend Georgia Tech is no gimme. UVA is looking like no bowl this year, the first after Bronco Mendenhall left. We were tracking him since he first became the defensive coordinator at BYU, or even before when he was at New Mexico. Some talk of him taking over at beleaguered Colorado... The only FBS team with 0 wins so far, halfway through the season. UMass and UConn have wins! And woeful Colorado State!
Fresno State continues to sink, so at least BYU will catch up on them as far as all-time winning percentage. The Bulldogs are rated 88th and are a ugly looking 1-4. No bowl for them, unless something drastic changes, next up a decent San Jose State team.
And of course the new kids on the block darlings, James Madison Dukes! They continue to rise and smash, after crunching Arkansas State 42-20, they next have Georgia Southern. I say the Dukes got this.
Well, I could bemoan the BYU game further, but suffice it to say that Notre Dame played really well and I expect them to finish strong. Next up fo them Stanford, which may be winless, but has had a harder schedule than the Buffs as mentioned above. Check that, they are 1-4, having beaten Colgate (not the toothpaste!) first game of the 2022 season.
That is that for now. Things could look up if the Cougars and Hoosiers could only win...
