Veteran Tribute 2021

I have thought a lot about U.S. and other war veterans; I have thought a lot about the meaning and life of one in particular: her name is Alyssa Petersen. I have never met her, and I do not know that much about her. But what I think I know about her is important, and I will explain why.

We in the United States are fortunate that a lot of military veterans have served to safeguard and protect our freedoms and our way of life. We have fought for our own rights and independence since the 1700s, when we decided (many of my ancestors were loyalists or had not immigrated) to throw off the monarchy of England and fight for self-sovereignty as a new nation made up from disparate colonies. While we (again, the first U.S. citizens) could be cruel to native Americans, and many owned humans in the South, and women were not too empowered, the United States became a government and a land where we empowered many who did not have a chance to be economically or socially empowered before. Eventually our land became fair and just for all, to include those born with physical and mental disabilities. This is the truest measure of a good society. Protecting the weakest.

Not only has the United State fought for its own interests and lands, starting with the native Americans, the French (when American colonists fought with Great Britain), the British, the Mexicans, the Spanish; we have also lent a hand to other countries to ensure that they would be free as well. This includes the Western Powers of World Wars One and Two, the Koreans of their great conflict, Vietnam, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and many others where we supported the independence of those who sought to overthrow their oppressors or militant threats. Even tiny Grenada in the 1980s received our military backing to stop a would-be authoritative ruler.

The United States stands for freedom, prosperity, and commerce. Iraq under Saddam Hussein posed a particular threat to those ideals, and ultimately, we went in to depose that despot of multiple generations in the Middle East. We have many people in 2021, both Republican and Democrat and others, certainly non-U.S. voices, who have summarized that the venture was mistaken and acted on under false pretenses. No Weapons of Mass Destruction were found. Hussein was not part of the 9/11 2001 attacks. The status quo of his dictatorship was not evil enough to get hundreds of thousands of our troops into his land, and expose many of them to the ills of civil conflict and violent insurgency. I understand those claims, and I can flesh them out in other dialogues. But this is about Alyssa, and her significance as a veteran. A patriot, a hero, a voice snuffed out in the wilderness, but a testament of courage not forgotten. A tragic yet significant part of our history, as a soldier, as an American, as a human.              And a Christian Latter-day Saint, too.

Alyssa was an Army Specialist in the U.S. Army in Iraq, in the first year of the war, a conflict that was not expected to be so virulent against our forces after removing the brutal regime. Decisions, some ill-conceived, by the United States lead to a greater anti-Coalition insurgency and threat to our troops than anticipated by President George Bush and the proponents of the war; reasons for that can be discussed some other time. But again, this is more about Specialist Peterson. She was a member of my faith, from Arizona, had served a church mission in the Netherlands, had graduated from Northern Arizona University in psychology, and had done well in the Arabic language at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. After moving to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and joining the 101st Airborne Division, she went to Iraq as an interrogator. Here the story goes bad.

The interrogation techniques used by her team on the Iraqi detainees were upsetting to her. She tried to protest. From what I know she did what she could as a lower ranking soldier to stop these harsh sessions, which were humiliating and torturous to both her and the subjects upon which they were implemented. Some of the tactics in interrogating the Iraqi detainees left her very much disturbed and in a position that she could not reconcile. She took her own life.

Yes, her life was more valuable than the causes for which she gave it, but she did make a statement. Surely her superiors and colleagues had to consider this drastic act and statement that she left behind regarding their methods and motivations. Like in a film about the Vietnam War, “Casualties of War”, there were unintended victims who became part of the tragedy and the loss of this campaign. A valiant young lady’s honor and esteem were violated; her conscience could not rest on these barbaric and hideous actions by so-called U.S. men and women in power. She saw through the justifications for torture and abuse, and she made her position known, albeit in such a sad, tragic way. It did not have to be that bad. I wish she had gone to prison for her protests instead, she would have eventually become vindicated in her convictions or moral objections.

              Alas.

Alyssa, you were the true veteran here. You were the American hero trying to do what is right to our enemy and to us as people. You stood for the right, and in my mind and heart you died for it. The ghastly and immoral photos from Abu Ghraib confirmed the nastiness and the losing hand of our military, and Other Government Agencies (OGA), which often can mean the CIA.

Alyssa was a light, a small candle, blown out way too early. She became one of the 4 thousand, nine hundred and two military personnel that died in Iraq from 2003 to 2020, approximately one fourth of whom perished in non-hostile fashion, which means by accident or illness, to include suicides. Some of those suicides were provoked by the ills and gut wrenches of the war itself.

As a Specialist in the United States Army serving full time duty in the Middle East on this auspicious and mostly peaceful Veteran’s Day, as an interrogator and an Arabic linguist, as a returned missionary and a person of morals and conscience, as a human being and as soldier I salute you, junior-enlisted Specialist Peterson.

Your light, as the light of hundreds of thousands of other victims from prior wars and conflicts from the Revolutionary War till now, is remembered. I do not know where your grave is, but someday I may find it like I have found the graves of thousands of Civil War dead across the eastern seaboard of the United States, or seen the memorials and markers of countless others across the world.

Happy Veteran’s Day. Solemn Veteran’s Day. A day to remember many who gave us hope to live into the future.

They gave all that we might have all that we have.

We love you and miss you, whether we know your names or not.

Our hearts and prayers belong to you and your families, and we are they.

Football 2021 Report Number 9

 Episode # 9 (Desert Fans)

The week has flown by for me and I wanted to get to the goings on of the football matches last Saturday, but it is late on Friday and I need to get to it. What happened?

Number one Georgia rested on a bye and is preparing for a possible contender in Florida. It should prove interesting. Most people think that the Bulldog defense will handle the Gators, but crazier things have happened. I say Georgia should win handily.

Number 13 Notre Dame squashed  the Trojans, 31-16. While USC is down right now (I love it!), Notre Dame is showing good things.

Next game:

Then we have the number 16 Auburn Tigers versus the tenth ranked Ole Miss Rebels. This is a fantastic match up. I do not know a lot about Ole Miss, but I think the Tigers have a good shot at winning.

My BYU Cougars made it back to the winning column by holding on to beat the Washington State Cougars in Pullman, 21 - 19. I heard that our fans were in big numbers and loud. BYU qualifies for a bowl, but they have wanted a better one than normal based on whipping the PAC -12 opponents. Big next game hosting Virginia, with their former 13-year BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall. Should be a good game, UVA would join the rankings if they were to win in Provo. Brigham Young would fall out again.

Speaking of falling from the rankings, the Clemson Tigers are not officially having abad year, losing to Pittsburgh, which now finds itself in the rankings with only one loss. Clemson has lost hopes of a big bowl, unless they totally turn things around and manage to win out. Does not seem likely.

Next: The Tigers take on the rebounding 3-4 Florida State Seminoles, who are now righting the disaster ship at 3-4. I truly want Clemson to pound them, yet another interesting game. What a great weekend for college football! Trick or treat!

Who else is left? Miami and IU.

The Hurricanes pulled off a great win against the formerly ranked #18 and one loss NC State Wolfpack. Way to save the season and get back to a respectable, or at least manageable 3-4. Next up is another chance to shine facing those same aforementioned one loss ranked Pittsburgh Panthers.

Good luck, ‘Canes! You may have found the right formula. Miami looks like they are in control of their own destiny enough to finish strong.

My Indiana Hoosiers cannot say so. Their back up QB is hurt since the drubbing by the Ohio State Buckeyes, who incidentally are back in the College Football Championship discussions, and pasted IU to the tune of 7 to 54.

The Indiana team has lost a lot of key players and have moved ball against a talented Cincy, but that is about it. Turnovers ruined that one, and the offense is not consistent at all, plus banged up. The Maryland Terrapins are the last chance, really, for a turn around. As in years past the Turtle will be a key significant game to win in order to see if the Hoosiers belong in the bowl picture or not. If they can beat Maryland, which is not an all a gimme, than the bowl season is a wash. If they win, they are still pushing their chances. We shall see.

Short week to right this, happy to be with you and God bless.

Enjoy the end of October no matter how the teams fare.

# * 8 Football 2021

Georgia is dominant. They beat down previously undefeated Kentucky, the Bulldog defense proving stout and strong, about as good as can be played, as many have observed this far into the season. A bye weekend of rest will do them well and they will reload against Florida, who was ranked until just being upset by LSU in a high scoring game this weekend. I sat next to a Georgia fan who was watching the UF v. LSU game live as it transpired. He wanted the Tigers to put the Gators further behind the Dawgs, and they did. Georgia is looking primed to make the run to the SEC championship, a likely rematch with the Tide.

#1 Georgia’s next: bye, October 23, 2021

Notre Dame can reset and hopefully beat the Trojans, who are struggling to win. Again, I am not a big UCLA fan after doing graduate work there, but I learned to hate those cross town rivals. Go Irish! They have the right youthful talent to get things done, despite some key injuries. Take down the Trojans, as the Utah Utes and others have already done. More than luck of the Irish, just give it the power required.

This is one of the best rivalries in not only the game of NCAA college football, but in all of sports. Get ‘er done.

#13 Notre Dame’s (#13, 5-1) at Southern Cal (3-3):

The Auburn Tigers proved impressive to beat the then ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, at their home. Bo Nix is breaking records at the QB position, the defense is doing enough to carry the day. I watched the whole game live as it was available to me in the desert. I was impressed by the receivers and most aspects of their game. Again, based on their schedule and the way they have played, it would not surprise me at all if the Tigers were a top 15, or possibly top 10 team.

Side note of worth —#2 Iowa proved that they were not that good, losing to the Purdue boys, final score 7 – 24. What a stinker “number two”! Yeah, that was fake news, Hawkeyes fans. Cincinnati now is super highly ranked, but I think their status is over-rated as well. Indiana, mentioned in a minute, could have beaten them with the right bounces.

#23 Auburn: bye

Speaking of Tigers, congrats to the Clemson variety for winning again, two in a row over good teams, and getting back into the rankings.  They squeaked by those pesky Orange 17 -14, and now look to be in control of a decent season despite the close loss to the Wolfpack, and the more than respectable opening loss to Georgia. The Steel City college is playing pretty well, so this should be a good test of character to get by the Panthers.

#24 Clemson (4-2): at Pitt (#23, 5-1)

Alas, my Cougars could not recuperate from the turnover laden loss to Boise State, and they got over-ran by a mean running game by the home town Baylor Bears. (In Waco, my sister-in-law, her husband, and oldest son went there from three hours away to see the match up. Their oldest girl is a freshman in Provo. Both California raised, neither parent had ever lived in Utah or Idaho). Apart from the lack of ground control, Baylor passes and special teams hurt my reeling Cougars, too. The offense was kept off balance, especially the BYU running game; now the Cougars of Provo will battle the Cougars of Pullman. I hope that the Y Cougs can maintain their dominance against the PAC-12, 3-0 so far. Some polls have Brigham Young ranked still, like CBS Sports, but the Kilane Sitake-led team has to show me more for that. It should be interesting this Saturday, against a squad that just lost their coach to not being vaccinated for COVID-19. Weird world we live in.

#30 Brigham Young (5-2): Washington State (4-3)

Indiana! My Hoosiers played some really good defense against an undefeated Michigan State team. The first TD for Sparty was a pick six, and another Touch Down came from a possession from another interception by the back-up QB, Jack Tuttle. IU settled for too many Field Goals after moving the ball pretty well, and lost 15 – 20. Ugh. We should have and could have re-won the Brass Spittoon, which my Hoosiers owned from last year’s better 6-2 Indiana team. The future looks tough for the rest of the season, but perhaps IU can muster some wins against the lesser Big-10 teams? Purdue looks pretty good now. Hard to see that upset happening with the Buckeyes, but that is why we play the game. Could we get a bunch of TOs to steal this one? Could the running game wake up a bit more? Strap your chin guards on tight, boys. 6 more games to go, and all of them will be a challenge.

#45 Indiana (2-4): Ohio State (#5, 5-1)

Tough results for the Hurricanes. A close loss where the Miami team had a hard time stopping the Tar Heels from scoring, even though the ‘Canes themselves wound up with 42 points. I saw the score progressing as I watched the Auburn-Arkansas match, and it seems that the Miami defense coul not get it done. Like my Cougars against Baylor. I think Miami will rebound, we know they have the talent. Perhaps my Hoosiers will come back to victories, too.

#50 Miami (2-4): hosting #18 N.C. State (5-1)

That is about all I got, except…

Air Force is 6-1 and plays undefeated San Diego State (6-0). Army, newly off a loss and 4-2, will face the undefeated 6-0 Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Navy (1-5) continues with a tough season and takes on the unblemished #2 (6-0) Cincinnati Bearcats. What a time to be in the military academies! There are 11 unscathed teams left in FBS football, and our brothers in arms play three of them.

Go, fight, win! Come home with honor.

See you soon. Well, maybe. Yours truly has some further desert duties upcoming, so we shall see how and when the next report may come. Peace and well wishes.

# 7 Football 2021

Hello, desert fans! Everybody okay? I know we have some disappointed team aficionados; I feel for you. But, as time marches on, we might be encouraged that we (yes, us, desert fans) are about half way through the regular season, which means those in certain arid locations might be closer to heading back to where we rightfully belong … ‘Nuff said!

Now to the football teams and the games: Georgia looks like the team to beat—other than regular powerhouse Alabama—after walloping Arkansas, 37 to 0.  The Hogs had previously beaten Texas and highly regarded Texas A & M, so some people (like me) thought that the Razorbacks might provide more resistance. Nope. The Bulldog defense looks to be one of the best college defensive times of all time, right now. Next on the slate for the Georgia killers, their next victim, er, opponent: Auburn. The War Eagle might actually put up some fight this Saturday afternoon. Best of luck to the War Damners. The Tigers beat LSU, 24 -19 last week, so no one should sleep on them. The previous one-score loss to Penn State on the road looks pretty impressive still for Auburn, as now both the Nittany Lions and the Iowa Hawkeyes are considered top notch, both in the top 5. And playing each other this weekend.

As far as prioritizing by ranking our seven Desert Fans’ squads, my BYU Cougars have cracked the top 10 after handling the Utah State Aggies, 34 -20. They are now second after Georgia! Running back Tyler Allgeier went beast mode with over two hundred rushing yards against the second rival of the state, and second win. The third string QB Jacob Conover helped score a bit more in the second half, and we hope the first stringer Jaren Hall will be back to face the Inter-Mountain West rival, Boise State Broncos (second string QB knocked right at the half with concussion symptoms). While the Idaho flagship school, the Broncos, are only 2-3, with some disappointing results thus far in 2021, they always have pretty good talent[1]. Some former injured Cougars made it back onto the field, so there are hopes that they are closer to full strength. BYU has not trailed all season, and they have a few more Power 5 teams on their schedule. Should be interesting as things shape up. Cincinnati has lesser talent to look forward to opposing, but beating a former regarded good team in Indiana, and now Notre Dame makes them look pretty good.

I waited till this paragraph to touch on it more: the Notre Dame Irish fell to the Cincinnati Bearcats, who I had underestimated. It was a close game; the QB who previously downed the IU Hoosiers also was clutch for Cincinnati. He can beat you with his legs, deceptive speed, when not making his throws. The Irish could not find the offense like when they overwhelmed the Badgers, so they lost 13 -24. Notre Dame now looks to rebound against the Virginia Tech Hokies, who are traditionally well stocked with talent, but as we have discussed the whole Atlantic Coast Conference seems to be down in 2021. Notre Dame can at least prove masters of that conference with whom they have a multi-game yearly contract, despite their distinct independent status.

Who is best of the last three teams remaining that we root for: Clemson, Miami, or Indiana? Not so fast Hoosiers: you look pretty lousy! The defense held up a bit, but they were shut out for the first time since the year 2000 (technically last century) 0 -24, in Happy Valley. The offense has been absent without leave, the starting QB Penix has been injured and knocked out of a game/season for the fourth year in a row. Things have to get better for them to have a chance at a bowl of any kind. The Hoosiers thankfully have a bye this week; they have seven more games to try to salvage a once promising season. All three losses were to now top 10 opponents, sure, but the ways that they lost is discouraging overall. And a good tailback (number two in carries) just declared that he is transferring into the portal window, too. That is a bigger thing now in all college sports. Others will have to step up.

Clemson has fallen from the top 25! They played the former undefeated Boston College Eagles and held on to win, 19 -13. While the offense continues to struggle in production, the overall team is strong enough to get the victory. Quality win, but not by much in terms of score. Looks as though the Tigers have a BYE weekend.

Miami is likely better than Indiana, possibly better than Clemson. I feel like if the ‘Canes lined up against my BYU Cougars, they would be a tough, tough, win. The Hurricanes went up against UVAA, the Wahoos and lost in heart breaking fashion. The game winning Field Goal went wide. I think left. Either way, the loss leaves them at 2-3. Same as Indiana.

Next for Miami: a bye. Get better, Mr. King et al. They got the horses to finish strong, right?

Last and likely least, my Indiana Hoosiers. The QB who was doing mostly nothing against the Nittany Lions has been knocked out; the future is not looking so great, as noted above. Take the weekend off and try to finish this season strong.

Quick report on the service academies: Air Force smothers the New Mexico Lobos, 38 – 10, Army loses to my home state Ball State Cardinals, 16 – 28, and Navy ekes out a clutch win against Central Florida Knights to get their first win in four games. Army still ahead, at 4-1, and the Falcons are now 4-1 as well. The Commander’s Cup may be close this year.

Last note about this weekend’s toilet bowl: 0-6 Connecticut takes on 0-5 Massachusetts. Someone has to win! No ties since 1996, in case you were wondering. I think the Huskies will take the Minutemen, but what does it matter, right?

In the end, why does anything matter? Okay, too cynical or absurd a note to leave on.  I will end with:

Go, team! Finish this thing the right way, guys. Do your best, get some rest. Have fun.

Till next week.

[1] As a recent Boise resident told me, State has the “the nation’s winningest team”, which I take to mean that the Broncos have the best winning percentage as a program in all FBS football. They have not been around at this level, too long, so maybe this tougher season will even some things out. Arguably Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Southern California, and Notre Dame could makes some claims to dominance, for sure.
